The Ethereum developer, who uses the pseudonym “Fede’s Intern,” is reportedly being detained in Izmir, Turkey.
The incident, which unfolded over the weekend, sparked widespread concern, particularly as details are lacking and the blame remains unclear.
The Ethereum Development took place in TĂĽrkiye over claims of mystical “misuse”
According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), Fede’s intern said he claimed Turkish authorities had helped misuse the Ethereum network.
“I’m in Izmir Turkey. They told my lawyer that they helped people abuse Ethereum and I might charge,” the developer wrote.
A famous Argentinian code researcher Fede’s intern denied fraud. He emphasized that he and his team are “just infrastructure builders” and are open to working with the authorities.
In a pursuit statement, he made clear what the Turkish Home Minister had specifically claimed.
The ambiguous nature of the “misuse” allegations raised questions within the crypto space. Turkish crypto commentator Cenk noted that there is “no legal basis” for detention based solely on such claims.
This skepticism comes from TĂĽrkiye, which applies existing commercial, consumer and criminal laws to crypto-related cases.
In the contemplated detention, Fede’s intern posted intermittent updates indicating that he was moved to a private room and served food.
He also argued that an arrangement was underway to leave Turkey to Europe via a private jet within hours. Once he reached Europe, he continued to fight the charges with a team of lawyers.
Messages from prominent figures in the Ethereum and Solana communities reportedly expressed support, some providing legal connections.
He draws precedents from Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who was arrested in Nigeria along with Nadiem Anjalwara, seeking transparency and a legitimate process.
However, some have expressed skepticism, suggesting that the incident may contain translation errors and misconceptions regarding the nature of blockchain infrastructure. Others are worried about showing potential regulations overreach in the area.
“The Ethereum developer being held in TĂĽrkiye – “Misuse of Ethereum” given to him as a reason. It’s still developing. It’s very troublesome.
The situation unfolds makes some points unclear:
Are fees directed personally towards Fede interns or related entities? Has his detention somehow tied to the broader sweep of arrests announced earlier this week by the Turkish Ministry of Home Affairs? What specific actions are classified as “misuse” of Ethereum?
Fede’s intern said he will be out of TĂĽrkiye and will share more specific details once the legal team approves it.
For now, the situation remains fluid. The only certainty is that the intersections of blockchain technology, legal systems, and international jurisdictions can create fast moving high-stakes scenarios.
This is especially true when prices are as vague as “misuse of Ethereum.”
This is a developing story. We will update as more information becomes available.
